Airport Construction Update

January 11, 2008

Pile Driving Starts Next Week for New Roadway Bridge near North Concourse
The upgraded airport roadway system will include two new bridges that will improve traffic flow at The New Airport. The north bridge will be located between the North Concourse and Terminal A to separate traffic and allow for the new Terminal A bypass that will let drivers go directly to Terminal B in the future.  The south bridge on Airport Boulevard south of Skyport Drive will separate traffic returning to the terminal area or leaving the airport.

Starting next week our contractors will drive approximately 150 piles over the next month that will support the new north bridge.  Work will be done during the daytime between 7:00 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. After the pile driving is done on the north bridge, the work will move to the south bridge site in late February.

Preliminary pile driving for the consolidated rental car garage opposite Terminal C also will begin in early February for less than a month.  Work will then restart around April for the remaining installation of approximately 2,200 piles over the following several months this year.

Terminal C Interim Parking Transition Completed
The old Terminal C short-term lot is now entirely closed so that we can begin preparing the site for the construction of our new 3350-space consolidated rental car and public parking garage.

The new interim surface parking lot with approximately 400 spaces is now open on the south side of the Terminal C baggage claim building. Over the next 30 months this lot will be used mostly by “”meeters and greeters” who park on an hourly basis, generally those who are picking up and dropping off passengers at Terminal C. Entrance to the new lot is from Airport Boulevard, south of Terminal C, where we’ve installed a new traffic signal. A map of the new parking area can be seen here: http://www.sjc.org/travelers/overview_map_1207.pdf

Terminal C Parking Lot Maximum Daily Fee goes up to $40
Effective next Tuesday, January 15, the maximum daily rate at the new lot next to Terminal C baggage claim will increase to $40 to encourage daily and long-term parkers to use either the Terminal A garage, which continues at a maximum of $30/day, or the long-term parking area on the west side of the airport, which remains $15/day. The hourly parking rate for the new Terminal C lot will remain at the current $3/hour, the same as at all our other Airport parking facilities.

Parking Available in Terminal A Garage
Although the smaller surface parking lot at Terminal C may fill and be briefly closed from time to time during mid-week peaks, parking is still available in the Terminal A garage.  Drivers parking for a day or more should use the garage and take the blue shuttle bus to Terminal C. The blue shuttle buses from Terminal A to Terminal C are very frequent, since all the buses go that way.  Returning from Terminal C to Terminal A, travelers do need to look for the "Inter-Terminal" shuttles (since the others take you back to long-term parking or the rental car center).

Guadalupe River Trail Work at Airport Parkway Completed
Construction of the Guadalupe River Trail undercrossing at Airport Parkway is substantially completed and open.  Santa Clara Valley Water District is extending and improving its trail along the Guadalupe River that runs next to the airport, under Highway 101, and north to Alviso to provide better access for recreational and commuter bicycling and walking in the San Jose and South Bay trail network. Southwest Airlines Announces Three New Daily Flights to Denver from SJC
Southwest Airlines has announced the start of three new daily nonstop flights between San José and Denver beginning May 10, 2008. With the additional service, Southwest now will offer 75 daily nonstop departures from Mineta San José International Airport to 12 cities. For more information, schedules and fares, go to www.southwest.com  or call Southwest reservations at 1-800-435-9792.

Construction Schedules Are Subject to Change
Because the $1.3 billion project to replace and upgrade the SJC terminal area is complex and moving very fast, our construction schedules are subject to continuing revision.  We will keep updating the public and our customers about the project details as they occur, but please bear with us as we adjust schedules for the project over the next two and a half years.  We appreciate your patience, and we thank you for flying San José while we build The New Airport.
