Airport
Construction Update
March 2008
PILE DRIVING HAS
BEGUN FOR ROADS AND GARAGE
Pile driving is underway for
the upgraded airport roadway system that will include two new overcrossings and
the Terminal A bypass. When completed, the bypass will provide more convenient access
to the new Terminal B. Work also has started
for the foundation for new consolidated rental car and public parking garage that
will bring rental car services right across from Terminal B.
These projects together require
driving approximately 2,500 concrete piles. Piles are steel-reinforced concrete “posts” driven 30 to 60 feet into the
ground to provide support for the overcrossings, foundations, and retaining
walls being constructed as part of the Airport’s Terminal Area Improvement
Program.
WHEN WILL THE WORK
OCCUR?
The pile driving for these
projects begin in mid-March, and will last for approximately four months. The majority of pile driving will occur
during the daytime hours, and occasionally on a Saturday. The Airport has placed boxes of earplugs in
Terminal C for the public and employees while pile driving continues. Work will not be performed on Sundays or holidays.
During the week of March 24
to 29, however, pile driving for the new garage will occur during the night
from approximately 11:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.
This night work is necessary for access and safety when the airport roadways
are not in use.
