Airport Construction Update

May 20, 2009

Terminal Roadway Back to "Normal" on Friday.
Construction on the new lanes in front of Terminal B and Terminal C is nearly complete, and we’ll return to our previous roadway configuration on Friday, May 22

  • Drivers will be able to use either the new overcrossing or the new lanes in front of the Terminal B construction and Terminal C.  Traffic going over the bridge will be directed back towards Airport Parkway and won’t be able to use the Skyport Drive or Coleman Avenue exits from the airport.
  • The shift also will restore the convenient bypass to reach Terminal C and the temporary connector between Airport Blvd. and Terminal Drive that allows drivers coming from the Terminal A parking garage, long-term parking, and rental car center access to all three exit roads from the Airport.
  • The departures curb for Terminal C will be relocated back in front of the terminal.  This will serve passengers boarding flights with Alaska/Horizon, Continental, Delta, Frontier, jetBlue, Northwest, United, and US Airways.  The new ground transportation island will continue to serve arriving passengers seeking courtesy shuttles and airport’s blue shuttle buses. The VTA #10 Airport Flyer will relocate back the Terminal C curbside by the baggage claim area.
  • We currently plan to close the bypass and interim connector road this fall so we can build the permanent bypass and a parking area for Terminal B Concourse offices.  The final road configuration still is scheduled for completion in fall 2010.

Memorial Day Holiday Begins Summer Travel Season.
As Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer travel season, we remind travelers again to plan ahead and check in early to prevent delays and problems on a traditionally busy travel holiday. The busiest travel days likely will be getaway day on Friday, May 22, and the return from the holiday on Monday, May 26.

We expect passenger volume to be a little lower than last year’s four-day holiday weekend because of the recession, but it still will be busy. Therefore we still recommend that travelers get to the terminal early, at least 90 minutes before domestic departures and two hours before international departures.

Passengers who already have their boarding passes and have only carry-on luggage can use the Express Security Checkpoint for Terminal A located at the International Arrivals Building to avoid the security lines at Terminal A, especially on the busy days of Friday, May 22, and Monday, May 25.

Travelers should check www.tsa.gov for comprehensive guidance and helpful information to help prepare for travel over Memorial Day weekend and the busy summer season ahead. Remember the TSA “3-1-1” security program:  Only liquids and gels that are in containers no larger than three ounces are permitted in carry-on luggage.  They must be kept in a clear sealed plastic bag no larger than one quart. And only one bag per traveler is allowed at the security checkpoint.

Before coming to the airport, check the status of your flight by contacting the airline’s toll-free number or by visiting the airline’s web site. Links to SJC’s airline websites can be found at www.flysanjose.com. Have your boarding pass and a photo ID in hand (such as your driver’s license or passport). Know your airline’s carry-on limits – under federal rules, each passenger is allowed one standard-size carry-on bag and one personal item, such as a purse, briefcase or laptop computer.

Spacious New Ticketing Lobbies Now Open in Terminal A.
The new street-level Terminal A ticketing lobbies opened for service last week, the first brand-new customer space created by the airport’s modernization project.

  • The new ticket lobbies have triple the space for customers and 60% more ticketing stations than before to serve passengers more comfortably and efficiently.  In addition, Terminal A now has a much longer curb for departing passengers to unload and conveniently check in at street level.
  • Southwest Airlines is in the south ticketing lobby, and American, Hawaiian, and Mexicana Airlines are in the north ticketing lobby. Here’s a map showing the location of the new lobbies and their airlines.
  • The old ticketing lobby on the second level will be demolished to make way for additional security checkpoints that will help reduce waiting times in passenger queues. The additional checkpoints are scheduled for completion this fall.

Terminal A Gates to be Renumbered in July.
In preparation for the addition of the new aircraft gates opening in the Terminal B Concourse this summer, we will renumber all the gates in Terminal A in July.  When the change occurs, Gate 1 will be at the far north end of Terminal A (currently Gate A16).  Gates currently numbered A1A and A1B for international flights at the south end of Terminal A will become Gate 16. Under the new numbering sequence, the first gate in Terminal B Concourse will be Gate 17, and Gate 28 will be at the far south end of Terminal B when we open the new terminal next year.

Safety Reminder
Heavy construction equipment continues to use Airport roads.  As always, please watch out for other drivers, pedestrians, and construction workers.  Airport parking control and traffic officers are there to help keep traffic flowing safely, so please pay attention to them, too, especially during peak times. And please, pedestrians should not walk through construction zones – follow the designated walkways.

Construction Schedules are Subject to Change.
We will keep updating the public and our customers about the project details as they occur, but please bear with us as we adjust schedules for the project.  We appreciate your patience, and thank you for flying San José while we build The New Airport for you.
